World Cup 2026 Boston Fan Guide: Gillette Stadium, Fan Bars & Trip Planning

Fanway Team·2026-05-01·3 min read

Boston is compact, walkable, historically dense, and home to one of the most passionate Irish and European football supporter communities on the East Coast. The stadium is 30 miles south in Foxborough, but Boston rewards the commute — base yourself in the city and make the match-day trip.

Getting to Gillette Stadium

Gillette Stadium is in Foxborough, Massachusetts — 30 miles south of Boston. It seats 65,000 and is home to the New England Patriots NFL team. For ground-level advice from a Boston local on exactly how to plan your match day there, read our Gillette Stadium insider guide.

By commuter rail: The MBTA Providence/Stoughton Line runs match-day service from South Station in Boston to Foxboro station, adjacent to the stadium. Journey: approximately 60 minutes. This is the best option — book tickets in advance as trains sell out for major matches.

By car: I-95 South to Route 1 South. About 45 minutes without traffic, significantly more on match day. Parking is plentiful but pre-booking is recommended.

By rideshare: Works, but post-match demand spikes sharply. Budget extra time and cost after the final whistle.

Best Fan Bars in Boston

The Banshee (Dorchester): The authentic Irish football pub in Boston. Champions League and international matches are events here. Expect a full house for any Ireland game or major European fixture.

Croke Park (Dorchester): Named for the Dublin stadium, this Irish bar is a genuine football venue. Good Guinness, knowledgeable regulars.

The Penalty Box (Fenway): Sports bar with good screen coverage, reliably packed for international matches, and well-positioned near the Green Line.

McGreevy's (Back Bay): The city's oldest sports bar. History, screens everywhere, proper Boston atmosphere.

Where to Stay in Boston

Back Bay: The most central and walkable neighbourhood. Excellent hotels, proximity to Copley Square, and easy transit to South Station for Gillette.

South End: Boston's restaurant district. Victorian row houses, James Beard-winning chefs, and a vibrant neighbourhood feel.

Beacon Hill: Charming gas-lit streets and Federal architecture. Quiet, beautiful, slightly removed from nightlife but worth it for the atmosphere.

Cambridge: Harvard Square and Kendall Square offer good hotels with T access into Boston. Quieter and often better value.

Neighbourhoods Worth Your Time

Beacon Hill: Walk Charles Street for antique shops and coffee, then up to the top for views and the Massachusetts State House.

North End: Boston's Italian neighbourhood. Hanover Street is lined with bakeries and restaurants. Mike's Pastry for cannoli is obligatory, even if the line tests your patience.

Harvard Square (Cambridge): Book shops, independent cafés, and the Harvard campus. Worth an afternoon.

Seaport District: Boston's newest neighbourhood. Modern architecture, good restaurants, and the Institute of Contemporary Art.

Food Worth Organising Your Schedule Around

Neptune Oyster (North End): Twelve seats at the bar, half-shell oysters, and a New England lobster roll with warm butter. The queue can be long — worth it.

Row 34 (Fort Point): Outstanding seafood restaurant in the Seaport. The fried clams and oyster selection are exceptional. Better service than Neptune.

Toro (South End): Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette's Spanish tapas restaurant. Corn with aioli, bone marrow, and a legendary gin and tonic. Book ahead.

Oleana (Cambridge): Ana Sortun's Eastern Mediterranean cooking. The meze spread and the lamb dishes are among the best things you can eat in Boston.

Mike's Pastry (North End): Cannoli. Multiple flavours. The ricotta original is the benchmark. Yes, the line is worth it.
