World Cup 2026 New York: Best Areas to Stay for Every Type of Fan

Fanway Team·2026-05-15·5 min read

New York is hosting the World Cup Final. That single fact changes everything about accommodation — demand will be unlike any tournament match in any other city, and prices will reflect it. The decisions you make about where to stay will shape your entire trip.

The other thing to know upfront: MetLife Stadium is not in New York. It's in East Rutherford, New Jersey — a 20-minute train from Penn Station on a good day, longer on match day. Where you stay in New York matters more for your quality of life than for your commute to the stadium, because the commute is fixed regardless of which Manhattan neighbourhood you're in.

For the full stadium logistics breakdown, see our New York fan guide.

Best Areas for Solo Fans

Hell's Kitchen (Midtown West): The practical choice for solo fans who want to be in the middle of everything. Walking distance to Penn Station for the NJ Transit match-day trains, dense bar and restaurant options within a few blocks, and hotel rates that are high but not obscene compared to the rest of Midtown. The neighbourhood has genuine character — less tourist-trap than Times Square, more accessible than the Village.

Lower East Side: If you want nightlife and the ability to meet other fans without trying, the LES is where it happens. The bar density is extraordinary, the crowd skews international, and accommodation is cheaper than Midtown. The trade-off is a longer commute to Penn Station — budget an extra 25 minutes on match day.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn: Best value for solo fans who don't mind a subway ride. Excellent bars, a lively scene, and rates significantly below Manhattan. The Bedford Ave L train connects to Midtown in about 20 minutes.

Best Areas for Couples

West Village: The most romantic neighbourhood in New York. Cobblestone streets, Federal-era townhouses, exceptional restaurants, and a calm that feels genuinely removed from the city's intensity. Greenwich Avenue has some of the best independent shops and wine bars in the city. It's not cheap, but it's worth it for couples who want the New York experience rather than just a base.

DUMBO, Brooklyn: Manhattan Bridge views, the Brooklyn Bridge Park waterfront, good hotels and short-term rentals, and a neighbourhood that feels like a discovery rather than a tourist destination. The A/C trains connect to Penn Station in about 25 minutes.

Upper West Side: For couples who want comfort and space over nightlife. Lincoln Center, Riverside Park, and some of the city's best pre-war apartment buildings converted to hotels. Quieter than Midtown, genuinely pleasant to walk around.

Best Areas for Families

Upper East Side: The most family-practical neighbourhood in Manhattan. Central Park is on your doorstep, the Museum Mile runs along Fifth Avenue (Metropolitan Museum, Guggenheim, Museum of Natural History nearby), and the residential streets are calm. Hotels here tend to have larger rooms and better suite options than Midtown.

Jersey City, NJ: Counterintuitive but worth serious consideration for families. PATH train to Manhattan in 10–15 minutes, hotel rates significantly below Manhattan, and genuinely less chaotic. During the tournament, being slightly removed from the intensity of the city is an advantage, not a compromise. Hudson River views of the Manhattan skyline from your window.

Long Island City, Queens: Two subway stops from Midtown on the 7 train. More hotel supply, lower rates, family-friendly, and you're still in New York City rather than New Jersey. A good balance of value and proximity.

What to Avoid

Times Square: Unless your hotel deal is genuinely exceptional, avoid staying in Times Square itself. The noise is relentless, the crowds during the tournament will be extraordinary, and you pay a premium for the location without any lifestyle benefit. You can walk to Times Square from Hell's Kitchen in 5 minutes — stay there instead.

Newark, NJ: Close to the stadium on paper, but Newark has limited dining and nightlife options compared to Manhattan or Brooklyn. You'd be paying to be near a stadium that has nothing around it on non-match days.

Far outer boroughs without a clear transit plan: The Bronx, Staten Island, and eastern Queens offer cheap accommodation but require careful transit planning. Fine if you're organised, problematic if you're not.

Rental vs Hotel

Hotels make more sense for:

  • Stays of 3 nights or fewer
  • Solo fans or pairs who don't need kitchen access
  • Anyone who wants the flexibility to check out early without penalty

Rentals (Airbnb/VRBO) make more sense for:

  • Families who need multiple bedrooms
  • Groups of 3+ splitting costs
  • Stays of 5+ nights where the per-night savings add up
  • Anyone who wants a neighbourhood feel over a hotel corridor

One practical note: New York City has strict short-term rental regulations introduced in 2023. Legitimate Airbnb listings require the host to be present, which significantly limits the supply of whole-apartment rentals. Expect fewer options than you'd find in other cities — book early.

Price Expectations

Rates will spike significantly during World Cup match weeks. Rough ranges based on current trajectory:

AreaTypical nightly rate (tournament weeks)
Midtown Manhattan$350–$600
Hell's Kitchen$280–$450
West Village / Greenwich Village$320–$550
Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO)$200–$380
Long Island City, Queens$180–$320
Jersey City, NJ$150–$280

The Final weekend will be at the extreme end of these ranges — or above them. If you're attending the Final, book accommodation the moment your tickets are confirmed.
